DIMMU BORGIR – Stormblåst
Originally released in 1996, ‘Stormblåst’ (“Stormblown”) is the second album by Dimmu Borgir, following the underground success of their debut ‘For All Tid’ on No Colours Records.  It was the first album to feature Shagrath as main vocalist, though the last with lyrics sung entirely in the band’s native Norwegian, and portrays a much more atmospheric and melancholy tone than their later releases.  Dark, sweeping orchestral pieces vie with extravagant, melodic riffs and harsh, rasping vocals that spit the words with an almost vitriolic intensity, creating a masterpiece of symphonic Black Metal.

ZZ TOP – Live: Greatest Hits From Around The World

After over 45 years together, the Texan trio are finally set to release their first official live album ‘Greatest Hits Live’ on Suretone.  ‘Greatest Hits Live’ picks the greatest moments from ZZ Top’s illustrious back catalogue captured with the phenomenal energy of their renowned live performances.  It covers the breakthrough hit ‘La Grange’ plus three snappy blues-rock classics from the 1973 album ‘Tres Hombres’, through to their huge crossover hits – ‘Gimme All Your Lovin’’, ‘Sharp Dressed Man’, ‘Legs’ – and then to the present day with their recent collaboration with Jeff Beck on the Tennessee Ernie Ford / Merle Travis  ‘Sixteen Tons’.

FAITH NO MORE – King For A Day…Fool For A Lifetime

Last summer, Faith No More treated fans to “Sol Invictus,” the group’s first new studio release in almost 20 years.  This year, the band will revisit two classic albums with Deluxe Editions of “King for a Day…Fool for a Lifetime” and “Album of The Year.”  Following its Grammy nominated album “Angel Dust,” Faith No More returned in 1995 with “King for a Day…Fool for a Lifetime.”  Recorded at Bearsville Studios near Woodstock, New York, it was the first without longtime guitarist Jim Martin, whose departure had an influence on the direction of the album.

FAITH NO MORE – Album of the Year

This album, from 1997, references the bands musical roots and features darker tones, much like those heard on “Angel Dust.”  This release will be available as a 2CD set that includes the original release accompanied by a second disc filled with rarities related to the album.  These eight bonus tracks include live versions of the album track “Collision” and the Burt Bacharach and Hal David classic, “This Guy’s In Love with You,” plus rare mixes of “Last Cup of Sorrow,” “Pristina” and more.  These bonus tracks also appear on LP2 of the vinyl format.

RAMONES – Ramones: 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

The Ramones (Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee and Tommy) sounded like nothing else when their self-titled debut came roaring onto the scene in 1976. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Ramones, recently named the “Greatest Punk Album Of All Time” by Rolling Stone, and certainly one of the most important and influential albums of all time.  This 29-minute masterpiece helped launch the punk rock scenes in both America and Britain, and also went on to inspire countless other artists for generations to come.

NEIL YOUNG 140g LP Reissues: Time Fades Away/On The Beach/Tonight’s The Night/Zuma

Four Neil Young titles reissued on 140g vinyl – “Tonight’s The Night” comes in a gatefold sleeve with lyric insert, while “Time Fades Away” and “Zuma” also both contain a lyric insert.

INDIE/POP/ALTERNATIVE

WILCO – Schmilco

Wilco’s Schmilco is a mostly acoustic record, but that doesn’t mean it’s a tame one.  It bears neither the vicious, fuzz-glam guitars of 2015’s Star Wars, nor the dazzling, baroque-ish arrangements that fans have come to expect.  But in their place is a spaciousness and chaos that might feel welcome after twenty-some years of enjoyed but now-familiar Wilco releases. Schmilco is loose, and that’s a good thing.  Schmilco is Grammy-award winning Wilco’s tenth studio album and its follow up to last year’s Star Wars.

NEW ORDER – Singles 2CD/4LP

One of the most celebrated back catalogues in British music history is set to be rediscovered when New Order’s ‘Singles’ compilation is released in remastered and updated form.  ‘Singles’ charts New Order’s finest moments, ranging from their 1981 debut ‘Ceremony’ through to the influential classic ‘Blue Monday’ and other career highlights including ‘Confusion’, ‘True Faith’, ‘Regret’ and ‘Crystal’ plus the chart-topping football anthem ‘World in Motion’.  A decade after its initial release, ‘Singles’ has been refined to become a greatly improved representation of the band’s history.  The renowned Frank Arkwright (The Smiths’ ‘Complete’) at Abbey Road has remastered the collection with all audio sourced from high quality transfers.

Bastille – Wild World

Bastille will release their long-awaited second album ‘Wild World’. It’s been three and a half years since their last album and in that gap, the boys have mastered a whopping deluxe version of their debut ‘Bad Blood’, released a ‘mind-melting’ mixtape and toured the world extensively. Recent months has seen them working on a slate of brand new material and in September we’ll finally get to hear it.

The Beatles – The Beatles: Live At The Hollywood Bowl

The Beatles: Live At The Hollywood Bowl is a new album that captures the joyous exuberance of the band’s three sold-out concerts at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl in 1964 and 1965. The CD will be packaged in a ‘digisleeve’ and accompanied by a 24 page booklet with new liner notes by David Fricke. While The Beatles: Live At The Hollywood Bowl references the long out of print 1977 album, it is an entirely new release, directly sourced from the original three track tapes of the concerts.

The Verve – A Storm In Heaven/A Northern Soul/Urban Hymns

3 popular studio albums by The Verve are being made available again as deluxe formats and on vinyl. A Storm In Heaven, the bands debut album from 1993, gets a thorough overhaul with this 4-disc boxed Super Deluxe Edition. A Northern Soul comes augmented by all of the associated B-sides, two previously unreleased BBC radio sessions and seven unreleased studio tracks, including early versions of ‘The Rolling People’ and ‘Come On’. The package comes in a lift-off-lid box covered in silver mirrorboard as with the original LP release and contains four postcards, a poster and a 36-page book with new interviews and previously unseen photos. The album will also be available on vinyl, along with Urban Hymns.

Teenage Fanclub – Here

One of the UK’s most celebrated bands, Teenage Fanclub, make their their long-awaited return with the release of tenth album, Here, on 9th September. Here is a collection of twelve songs about the only things that truly matter – life and love.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Skeleton Tree

Skeleton Tree began its journey in late 2014 at Retreat Studios, Brighton, with further sessions at La Frette Studios, France in autumn 2015. The album was mixed at AIR Studios, London in early 2016.
The first opportunity anyone will have to hear any of the songs from the album will be to watch One More Time With Feeling, directed by Andrew Dominik (Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly). The film will screen in more than 650 cinemas across the world on 8th September 2016, immediately prior to the release of Skeleton Tree the following day.

Drugdealer – The End Of Comedy

‘The End Of Comedy’ is the debut album by Drugdealer, a new project conceived and conducted by Los Angeles artist Michael Collins (formerly of Run DMT, Salvia Plath), who guides a group of Angelenos – including Ariel Pink and Natalie Mering (Weyes Blood) – through a whimsical world informed by Jean Baudrillard, social media perception, Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Western vistas and Collins’s endless travels.

Jack White – Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016

XL Recordings present ‘Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016’, a 26 track double CD / double LP featuring alternate versions, mixes and previously unreleased recordings from The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and solo material all completely remastered. This is the essential Jack White songwriting collection.

HIP HOP/ELECTRONICA

M.I.A – AIM

M.I.A. will release a new studio album, AIM, on 9th September the record features collaborations with the likes of Skrillex, Zayn Malik, Diplo and Blaqstarr and is the fifth in a line of critically-acclaimed albums from the London-based artist (following Arular, Kala, /\/\ /\ Y /\ and Matangi). Featuring ‘Borders’, ‘Go Off’ and ‘Bird Song’, AIM is a thrilling kaleidoscope of global sounds at once forward-thinking, fun, provocative and totally unique – much like MIA herself.

SOUL/JAZZ/WORLD

Various Artists / Soul Jazz Records presents Nigeria Soul Fever

Soul Jazz Records’ new ‘Nigeria Soul Fever’ is the label’s first release to explore the vast wealth of Nigerian music recorded in the 1970s. The new album comes with introductory sleevenotes by Bill Brewster (author of ‘Last Night A DJ Saved My Life’). Packed with Afro-Funk, disco and boogie all from Nigeria, this album brings together a stunning collection of diverse West African sounds.

SOUNDTRACKS

Various Artists – The Man Who Fell To Earth

To celebrate Studiocanal’s 40th Anniversary release of Nic Roeg’s cult classic ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’, starring David Bowie, we will be releasing the original soundtrack, available for the very first time, containing seminal pieces from the film by John Phillips and Stomu Yamash’ta. The film itself reached cult status due to Bowie’s outstanding performance, and confirmed the film’s director Nic Roeg, and book’s author Walter Tevis, as champions of their respective fields. The music, highly celebrated but until now unavailable as a body of work, can now finally be acknowledged in its own light.

Angelo Badalamenti – Twin Peaks

Available for the first time in 25 years Death Waltz Recording Company are immensely proud to be reissuing the score to Twin Peaks an era defining TV show and Soundtrack. Freshly re-mastered for this re-release and approved by both director David Lynch and composer Angelo Badalamenti.

W.A.S.P. – The Sting: Live In Los Angeles

Wreckless Eric – Wreckless Eric

Wreckless Eric was one of the original crop of wonderful stars on the infamous Stiff Records label, along with The Damned, Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, Nick Lowe, and a couple of years later Madness. Features Eric’s most famous song – the legendary ‘Whole Wide World’, now critically considered to be one of the best punk rock singles of all time. ‘Whole Wide World’ has appeared in several films, most recently in the 2006 film ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ where Will Ferrell starts singing the song while playing the guitar before the original version takes over. Bonus tracks are the b-side and fan favourite ‘Semaphore Signals’ and Wreckless Eric’s two contributions to the classic Live compilation from the first Stiff tour – ‘Stiffs Live Stiffs’.

ATTICA RIOTS – Attica Riots EP (RSD store exclusive 7″)

Canadian pop-rock outfit ATTICA RIOTS make a brand of synth driven energetic pop rock that oft graces the shores of 6Music.  Described by VICE/NOISEY as ‘infectious alternative anthems’ their energetic live shows are thing of legend, bringing down the house at exclusive shows at THE TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL and the JUNO AWARDS.  For Fans Of: The Killers, The Wombats, Reverend & The Makers, Years & Years, Friendly Fires, New Order, Happy Mondays, Waving Your Hands In The Air Like You Just Don’t Care.

CASS McCOMBS – Mangy Love
Over the past decade, Cass McCombs has established himself as one of our premier songwriters.  It’s a career that’s twisted and turned, from style to subject, both between records and within them.  His new record, “Mangy Love,” ventures into realms of experimental soul, twisted psychedelia, and straight-up rock, resulting in a sound that articulates his live show better than ever before. Thematically, it’s far darker, tackling heavy issues through McCombs’ uniquely cracked lens of (oftentimes hilarious) lyrical wit and acumen toward subtlety.  Hip-hop and Beat poetry influences have never been more evident, with several songs employing a speechstyle and clever fast-paced wordplay.  There are guest appearances by many fellow musicians of his tribe ranging from Angel Olsen to Blake Mills, under the production of veteran Rob Schnapf, and the overall result is his most immediate and upbeat record to date.

Scott Walker – 5 Classic Albums
A selection of 5 classic studio albums packaged together in a new slim line slipcase from the man who is noted for his distinctive baritone voice and for the unorthodox career path which has taken him from 1960s pop icon to 21st century avant-garde musician. Includes the albums: Scott, Scott 2, Scott 3, Scott 4 & Til’ The Band Comes In.

Frank Zappa – Hot Rats
Hot Rats is the second solo album by Frank Zappa. It was originally released in October 1969. Five of the six songs are instrumental (“Willie the Pimp” features a short vocal by Captain Beefheart). It was Zappa’s first recording project after the dissolution of the original Mothers of Invention. In his original sleeve notes Zappa described the album as “a movie for your ears.” This was the first Frank Zappa album recorded on 16-track equipment and one of the first albums to use this technology. Machines with 16 individual tracks allow for much more flexibility in multi-tracking and overdubbing than the professional 4- and 8-track reel-to-reel tape recorders that were standard in 1969.

Thompson Twins – Into The Gap
Remastered double 180g vinyl album set featuring the original album plus a bonus disc of 6 tracks originally only available on the 1984 Cassette Edition of the album. Tom Bailey has provided exclusive sleeve notes for this Limited Edition two album set. This is the fourth studio album by the band and originally released in February 1984. This remastered edition comes with heavyweight wide spined sleeve and newly designed inner bags. The second disc contains the 12inch Extended Versions of “Doctor Doctor’, ‘Hold Me Now’ and ‘Sister Of Mercy’ and remixes of ‘Day After Day’ and ‘You Take Me Up’ under the guise of ‘Panic Station’ and ‘Down Tools’ respectively. There is also the intrumental ‘Leopard Ray’.

             Morgan Delt – ‘Phase Zero’
The invocation of classic West Coast psychedelia that permeates Morgan Delt’s Sub Pop debut album feels like a continuous sunrise, never concealing its influences yet perfectly putting its songs through a gauzy lens that blurs and obscures. The ten song collection, performed entirely by Delt, recorded in his Topanga Canyon studio and mastered by JJ Golden, is a home-fi construction with a more subtle, braintickling character than its predecessor and somewhat reflects a realist take on the flower power fantasy of 1967. Doused in echo and haze, slow chords lap in like Pacific waves, flanked by gentle whispers of multi-tracked, cooing vox, phased guitars and fuzz that calmly surrounds the listener’s head less than it jabs at the cortex.

The Parrots – ‘Los Niños Sin Miedo’
The Parrots – Diego García (vocals / guitar), Alex de Lucas (bass) and Larry Balboa (drums) – are a loose-hipped, primordial rock ‘n’ roll band from Madrid who met at university in the city and evolved from the same firmament of like-minded artists, photographers, DJs and musicians that recently spawned the acclaimed band Hinds. (The Parrots’ Diego produced Hinds’ recently released acclaimed album ‘Leave Me Alone’.)  The band recorded ‘Los Niños Sin Miedo’ in one week last September down by the sea in Cádiz at the studios of much-loved Spanish sound engineer Paco Loco. An idyllic setting conducive to the recording of the album, Paco’s infectious enthusiasm and artistic insight made the process even easier.

New Model Army – ‘Winter’
This is their first full studio album since their acclaimed long-player “Between Dog and Wolf” kick-started a creative renaissance in 2013. The album is a powerful and emotionally intense body of work. From the opening epic “Beginning” through to the closing song “After Something” the album builds on the new directions taken by “Between Dog and Wolf”, yet also has familiar echoes of the immediacy and engagement of the band’s classic albums “The Ghost of Cain” and “Thunder and Consolation”.

 ELECTRONICA/DANCE/HIP HOP

De La Soul – And The Anonymous Nobody…
The creation of and the Anonymous Nobody has been several years in the making. De La Soul wanted to make another sample-based album in the vein of 3 Feet High and Rising. In order to do so, and avoid the legalities of sample clearance, they spent a few years recording more than 300 hours of live music, converging everything from bossa nova, soul and hip-hop to funk, disco and reggae, creating their own sample library. The body of work is a concept and continuous story, even down to the transitions of songs with sound effects and instrumentals. The features-based record is mixed by Bob Power, Morgan Garcia and De La Soul, and was produced by De La Soul and Dave West. Guest appearances include Snoop Dogg, Usher, 2 Chainz, Damon Albarn, David Byrne, Jill Scott and more.

Red Pill – Instinctive Drowning
Red Pill is a member of the Hip-Hop collective Ugly Heroes consisting of producer Apollo Brown (Ghostface Killah, Ras Kass, Vinnie Paz, Masta Ace), & MC Verbal Kent and he’s previously worked with Oddisee & L’Orange. This album is produced entirely by illPoetic. The deeply personal narrative starts with Pill in the hospital in 2013 when doctors thought he had brain cancer and may be dying. It turned out he had viral meningitis – common to drunks – and only one doctor had the balls to tell him to stop drinking. Red Pill told himself he was going to stop drinking but after two weeks of sickness, he went to the liquor store again and hasn’t stopped. The story deepens as Red Pill reveals that his mom died from alcoholism when he was 19 in the most gut wrenching song you’ll ever listen to as your eyes fill with tears knowing there is too much truth.

SOUL/JAZZ/WORLD

Hiatus Kaiyote – Breathing Underwater (DJ Spinna Galactic Soul Remix & Instrumental)
In recent years Hiatus Kaiyote have gone from Down Under to somewhere near the stratosphere. After 2012’s ‘Tawk Tomahawk’ had drawn the attention of Europe and the US, the exciting Aussie quartet officially reached big deal status when Gilles Peterson bestowed upon them his coveted Breakthrough Act of the Year in 2013.Featuring an unabashed tribute to Stevie Wonder, with ‘Breathing Underwater’ seeing lead singer and Wonder disciple Nai Palm pay homage to the superstar. Taking a short cut through the whole six degrees of separation equation, DJ Spinna, another conspicuous fan of the band and someone who knows a thing or two about Wonder, made sure the man himself got to hear the track, ahead of remixing the original and bringing close a dancefloor from far far away. Spinna’s own take on cosmic disco is all in a day’s work for a producer who time and again shows ease of transition between hip-hop, soul, groove, disco, funk and all in between. A mixture of warmth and fragility, across both vocal and instrumental versions, continues the band’s starry ascent.

Various Artists – Kon & The Gang
Vinyl obsessive, renowned DJ and leading light of the global edit scene, Kon knows a thing or two about good music. His latest project, Kon & The Gang, introduces a selection of tracks, remixes and edits that the Boston native has lent his golden touch to over the years. Featuring artists à la mode Truccy (Compost’s Rainer Trueby & Corrado Bucci), Eli Escobar, Seven Davis Jr, Medlar and Thatmanmonkz, the album gives newcomers to the scene a fantastic taste of the DIY disco / throwback house revival which is currently taking the underground by storm. A mixture of effortlessly cool, slow slung disco & boogie and deftly edited dancefloor gems, ‘Kon & The Gang’ is sure to delight fans of soulful music old and new.

Various Artists – Off Track Vol. 2 Compiled & Mixed by Kon & Amir
To celebrate 20 years of Barely Breaking even, we’ve been hard at work re-stocking a few of our most sought-after back catalogue gems. The second volume in Kon & Amir’s famed ‘Off Track’ series, this 2008 collection of obscure classics was dedicated to the New York borough of Queens. The duo’s fanatical love of music and inexhaustible appetite for the next sound puts them in a perfect position to select three disc’s worth of magical soul, funk and Afro-beat, spanning three decades from the 60’s through to the ’80s. This eclectic and wonderful compilation sees Kon taking us on a magical disco mystery tour, peppering his mix with his customary re-edits. Amir takes us on an African safari, his mix evoking the sounds and smells of this beautiful continent.

Various Artists – The Rough Guide to Bottleneck Blues
The profound effect of the bottleneck style on the Mississippi Delta blues is demonstrated by legends such as Charley Patton, Son House and Bukka White. They were able to harness the heightened resonance and volume that it allowed, and create extraordinary effects such as that of a train whistle. Bukka White’s ‘Jitterbug Swing’ shows how his guitar style was influenced by playing the diddley bow or jitterbug as a child, a single-stringed instrument played using a slide and thought to derive from West Africa.

METAL/PUNK/ROCK

Tarja – The Shadow Self
Brand new FULL heavy rock album.  In Spring 2016, Tarja announced not only one but two (!) heavy rock albums. With over 50 minutes of brand new music, “The Brightest Void” – the prequel and a full album on its own – will lead the way and sweeten the wait to the new studio album “The Shadow Self” in August. Tarja’s incredible creative urge and incredible musical output shows on both musical releases which can be seen as two independent records which stand on their own. “The Brightest Void” and “The Shadow Self” are unpredictable. They amaze with their original ideas, heavy guitar riffs, a high class production as well as crystal clear sound.
The Cadillac Three – Bury Me In My Boots
Nashville’s best-kept secret, THE CADILLAC THREE, will uncover their talent worldwide on August 5 with the release of BURY ME IN MY BOOTS. Jaren Johnston (lead vocals), Neil Mason (percussion) and Kelby Ray (lap steel) all contributed writing credits to the 14 tracks featured throughout their long-awaited album on Big Machine Records, including their current single “Drunk Like You.”

Blues Pills – ‘Lady In Gold’
This young American-Swedish-French quartet create a very unique, intense and extraordinary rock atmosphere while at the same time having a major mainstream appeal that takes you right back to the time of Blues Pills’ ancestors Aretha Franklin, The Original Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Cream. Driving basslines, grooving drums and guitar solos from another planet by the only 19 year old Dorian Sorriaux, harmonized and tied together with such easiness and delight by Elin Larsson’s incredible voice. Blues Pills’ new album, entitled ‘Lady In Gold’, sees the quartet truly spreading their wings across the album’s bewitching 10 tracks. Incorporating delicate keyboards and lush backing vocals within their soulful blues attack has resulted in an incredible leap in songwriting and style.   Exclusive clear vinyl edition LP available to independent retailers (limited to 300 copies).

Carnifex – ‘Slow Death’
While approaching ‘Slow Death’, their sixth full length album, Carnifex possessed a distinct vision. The San Diego metal quintet would build on the expansiveness of 2014’s critically acclaimed ‘Die Without Hope’ as they brought a definitive darkness to the fold. “We wanted to take the next step,” affirms Scott. “On the last album, we started utilizing orchestration and additional programming in terms of classical and electronic sounds. We elevated that to a new level here. That’s why there’s a dark vibe that runs through the whole album. It adds a layer of atmosphere that gives you a different feeling.”

Marillion – Somewhere In London
Marillion formed in 1979 and have sold over 15 million albums worldwide. Rightly regarded as legends of progressive rock, the band have also continued to evolve and have been keen to embrace the possibilities of the internet, using innovative ways to interact with listeners resulting in an incredibly loyal legion of fans around the world. ‘Somewhere In London’ was filmed over the final 2 nights of the ‘Somewhere Else’ album tour at the London Forum in June 2007. Directed and edited by Tim Sidwell, this is now available in a CD / DVD set. The DVD audio is presented in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound, mixed by Michael Hunter.

The Dead Daisies – Make Some Noise
Make Some Noise is the third album under The Dead Daisies’ belt and surely not a weak counterpart to its predecessors. Names behind the collective say it all, as far as the musicianship is concerned, whereas the unit of twelve songs included on the CD remains cohesive stylistically. Each track on Make Some Noise oozes sheer power and unaffected catchiness, all of them being certain and worthy addition’s to the band’s overall catalog.

GOV’T MULE – The Tel-Star Sessions
MULE’S PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED FIRST RECORDINGS FROM 1994! THE TEL-STAR SESSIONS ARE REMIXED & MASTERED.  In early summer of 1994, the original Mule line-up of Warren Haynes, Allen Woody, and Matt Abts assembled at Tel-Star Studios outside Sarasota, Florida, to lay down on tape their vision to exhume the rock power trio – with influences ranging from Cream and Blue Cheer to ZZ Top.  The result of those sessions caputured the band’s rawness and excitement that Mule fans will love: straight-ahead rock- and blues-based song structures, explorative but tight and tough as a clenched fist.

INDIE/POP/ALTERNATIVE

Blossoms – Blossoms
2016 is Blossoms’ year. Catapulted into the musical subconscious in January, listed fourth in the BBC Soundpoll as well as almost every other ‘ones to watch’ list – Blossoms have been carefully carving out their position in the canon of Great British Rock’n’Roll ever since.  The band have earned rave critical comparisons to everyone from Arctic Monkeys to Depeche Mode to The Doors, shapeshifting between psychedelia, synth-pop and powerhouse indie, a mercurial sound at once familiar and unique. Released on a Mint Pack CD and a Full colour gatefold 12” LP with gold foil, double sided 180gsm heavyweight black vinyl.

Dinosaur Jr. – ‘Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not’
With all the insanity that is stalking the Earth in 2016, it’s nice to have something to rely on. Who’d’ve dared to think it’d be Dinosaur Jr.? There’s no doubt about it – this is the record that the fans have been waiting for since the original line up reformed.  The songs on ‘Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not’ were recorded over the past year or so, again at Amherst’s Bisquiteen Studio (located in a secret nook of J’s basement). The sound is great and roaring with J’s various bleeding ear psychedelic guitar touches oozing their way into the smudge-pop modelling, while Murph’s drums pound like Fred Flintstone’s feet and Lou’s bass weaves back and forth between proggy melodicism and post-core thug-hunch.  Exclusive purple vinyl format available to independent retailers.

Wild Beasts – ‘Boy King’

The quartet’s ever-present knack for sensual melody via Hayden Thorpe and Fleming’s dueting vocals, Ben Little’s sinuous guitar groove and Chris Talbot’s potent rhythm section carries in ‘Boy King’, an aggressive, snarling and priapic beast that delves into the darker side of masculinity and Thorpe’s own psyche. The raw pop of ‘Boy King’s songs are the perfect foil to Thorpe’s libidinous lyricism: “it became apparent that that guitar almost became the character within the songs, that phallic character, the all-conquering male,” he says. “I’m letting my inner Byron fully out, I thought I’d tucked him away, but he came screaming back like The Incredible Hulk.” Here lies Boy King’s greatest success – between the slide of prowling aggression and interior darkness, there are glorious, gorgeous moments. It’s yet another incomparable Wild Beasts record; a visceral, sensual and jolting body of work that acts as a remarkable soundtrack to the early 21st Century male malaise.

Russian Circles  – Guidance
CD Digipak. Gatefold LP + download card.“Guidance features a more bad-ass Russian Circles, a group that seems less elegiac, and more ready to plant their feet solidly on the ground, fighting back bloodied and bruised against each body blow.” – Pitchfork / “…the album – the group’s sixth – is moody, dense and dynamic, the gripping soundtrack to an un-filmed drama.” – Rolling Stone.

    Steve Jansen-Tender Extinction

Steve Jansen’s second solo album ‘Tender Extinction’ is an evocative blend of songs and instrumentals enlisting some of the singer/songwriters that appeared on Jansen’s previous solo work ‘Slope’, namely Tim Elsenburg (Sweet Billy Pilgrim) (UK) and Thomas Feiner (Anywhen) (Norway), as well as featuring new collaborations with Perry Blake (Ireland), Melentini (Greece), Nicola Hitchcock (UK) and including some vocal performances by Jansen himself. Atmospheric sound design creates a bed of complex, often atonal qualities, with delicate synth and orchestral arrangements drifting throughout to produce a multi-layered, emotive and hauntingly intimate album.

Jad And David Fair – Shake, Cackle And Squall
In 1974 Jad and David Fair teamed up to form a band called Half Japanese. The route was simple, at first. If one pounded on drums the other could squeeze sounds from an electric guitar. There were no other band members to stay in tune with, so there was no particular reason for them to worry about tuning the guitar in a traditional manner or learning traditional chords. They were free from the start to express their music in their own way. They traded off the guitar and drumming rolls. Whichever one sang the words also played the guitar and the other one drummed. For a couple of years they wrote, recorded and performed this way, without the convention of more members.  40 years later; 40 years better. One pick, two sticks and heart-warming vocals…… That’s all they needed; two brothers, still rockin’ the same damn deal!

The Pretty Things – SF Sorrow
The Pretty Things Classic Album S.F. Sorrow re-issued with original UK artwork on Madfish.  The Pretty Things created some of the most exciting and innovative records of the late sixties and early seventies. Winners of the Hero award at the 2009 Mojo Honours, the band have been name checked over the years by an array of artists ranging from The Clash, David Bowie and Aerosmith through to The Libertines and Kasabian. ‘SF Sorrow’ is one of the great classics of the psychedelic era. The album stands favourable comparison with ‘Sgt Pepper’ and ‘Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’ as one of the defining records of the time. Originally recorded at Abbey Road in 1967 and 1968 it was the first and the most complete rock-opera to be recorded and released, pre-dating ‘Tommy’ by a full year.

ELVIS PRESLEY – WAY DOWN IN THE JUNGLE ROOM
“The most complete and comprehensive collection of Presley’s final studio recordings ever assembled in one anthology – this is an essential addition for every fan’s library. With original recordings produced by Elvis Presley & Felton Jarvis, ‘Way Down In The Jungle Room’ brings together for the first time in one collection the master recordings and rare outtakes laid down during two mythical sessions (February 2nd-8th 1976 and October 28th-30th 1976) in Graceland’s den known as the Jungle Room.

Alex G – Rules
Lucky Number are thrilled to announce the release of both TRICK and RULES the latest albums to be released by the Philadelphia-based songwriter Alex Giannascoli, more commonly known as Alex G. Trick and Rules follow on the acclaimed heels of the November 2014 international release of Alex’s fifth album, DSU. Recorded prior to DSU and previously only available via Alex’s Bandcamp account, the albums have now been professionally mastered and are being made commercially available for the very first time.   Rules is soaked in the distinctive personality that is Alex G; the professionally mastered versions of these tracks further highlight that Alex has a serious knack for melodic songwriting. Trick is soaked in the distinctive personality that is Alex G; the professionally mastered versions of these tracks affirming that underneath all the unconventional guitar lines and scrawls of fuzz, Alex has a serious knack for melodic songwriting.

 ELECTRONICA/DANCE/HIP HOP

DaM-FunK / Nite-Funk – Believer / Can U Read Me
DaM-FunK’s DJ-Kicks was a deep exploration of the groove; a rare snapshot behind the shades of the man behind ‘Modern Funk’. Across the mixes nineteen tracks, Dam transported the listener through the lineage of this self-coined genre, spanning obscure funk, boogie, electro, house, ambient and soul cuts washed down with some exclusive tracks and collabs along the way – “A push and pull of nostalgia and progressiveness” says DaM.  One of the choice tracks from the mix, the DaM-FunK produced instrumental, “Believer”, has been handed over and remixed by none other than Larry Heard -one of the earliest innovators of this Modern Funk sound, and Godfather of House music himself.  Reworked under his rare Mr. Fingers alias, Heard teases and stretches the tight funk grooves to around the ten minute mark, lathering the beat in codeine smeared keys and shimmering pads in a heady trip through the L.A Hills and into coastal dance inter-zones.

Various Artists – Shapes In Space Vol. 2
Shapes: In Space’ is the latest in Tru Thoughts’ series of essential label compilations put together by A&R and co-owner (and renowned DJ) Robert Luis. Encompassing the best of the Brighton based label’s eclectic and international current roster, as well as some classic cuts and three exclusive tracks. As well as the sonic variety, this collection also highlights the diverse origins of the music on the label. From the UK, there are the soulful, forward-looking and beat-laden offerings of rising stars , while from the USA there is Moonchild, Lost Midas, The Seshen and Space Captain. Repping the authentic New Orleans sound, Grammy-nominated Hot 8 Brass Band have continued to win more and more fans across the world since they first started working with Tru Thoughts a decade ago. “As a DJ you can’t ignore it when a package comes from Tru Thoughts… brilliant stuff” – Gilles Peterson

SOUL/JAZZ/WORLD

Various Artists – Americana – Rock Your Soul – Blue Eyed Soul and Sounds from the Land of the Free
If you were inclined to put a location as the source of our Americana compilation – although the music here largely originates from other parts of the great union – it would be California. With its vast open-plan landscape and one season (summer) per year, it typifies the expansive style of songwriting that is contained in this compilation. There’s arguably something in the climate that dictates much of our musical terrain, whether it be the sweaty loose-hipped funk of New Orleans or the frenetic and frosty four-on-the-top of Detroit’s Motown. American songs are born out of an optimism that is probably piped in the water. I’d wager most of the acts we’ve compiled here shared – as well as a reticence to visit their barber – a love of Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) as, indeed, would any self-respecting music lover. This cadre of – mainly – white musicians, although clearly influenced by some African-American music, were the first generation not to be fixated solely by the music of black America. This was a flowering of something more general, less clearly defined, as hazy as an Los Angelean daybreak. What is notable about the music is that it’s neither black nor white, but contains elements of both, and though its influences undoubtedly derive from R&B (in the old meaning of the word), there are country, jazz, funk, rock and disco tinges to many of the songs.

Sonzeira – Tam Tam Tam Reimagined
‘Tam Tam Tam Reimagined’ is the second album to come from Gilles Peterson’s Sonzeira project. Where ‘Brasil Bam Bam Bam’ brought together the all-stars of Brazilian music, this album focuses on a key moment in the country’s history; a record made at a crucial moment serves as the jumping off point for an open-ended project of musical reimagining. The album was taken as a starting point for creating something new. Working with production associates Will Horrocks from UK bass-meddling duo LV and Rob Gallagher from 2 Banks of 4 – along with appearances from drumming prodigy Moses Boyd and Kassin from Rio’s Orquestra Imperial – they picked out phrases and snippets to build songs and tracks around. Released in 1957, ‘Tam Tam Tam’ celebrates a distinctly Afro-Brazilian culture that was later suppressed following a coup in the early 1960s that led to a military dictatorship. From sparkling recreations of the atmospheric original to reverb-laden dub, the album takes a magpie-like approach to re-interpreting the most exciting aspects of Prates’ postcard of Brazil to the world. ‘Tam Tam Tam’ Reimagined forms another part of the Sonzeira project’s aim to take apart and reassemble the pieces of what makes Brazil’s music so unique.

Best of Disco Demands compiled by Al Kent
“There’s always been Disco comps around of course but there was rarely anything that strayed too far from the standards.. the same songs kept appearing over and over again, or the comps would feature records you could pick up anywhere for little money. I’ve never seen the point in that. I gave up judging a record on its value or rarity a long time ago but surely there’s more to disco than Exodus, Martin Circus, Mass Production and all those Salsoul, West End and bloody Prelude records. So it was a nice surprise to find that there were other people out there who thought the same way. What we have here then is the full series, give or take one or two cuts, all remastered, many re-re-edited, with lots of nice naked pictures to boot. For those who’ve asked since day one “will there be vinyl” I can finally say yes, you’re holding it!”

The band issued two singles on the the tiny Innovation label, before joining up with Motown’s Eddie Kendricks in 1972 for his sophomore effort People…Hold On. The Young Senators’ fuzzed-out brand of psychedelic soul is often bootlegged, but finds it first legitimate release in 45 years via these remastered sides

METAL/PUNK/ROCK

Despised Icon – ‘Beast’
CD – £9.99
Mythology, fable and metaphor collide with ‘Beast‘, a blistering new album marking the return of Despised Icon. The genre-defining band are fully reawakened, poised to recapture the crown with the monstrous and merciless might of their potent expression.  Featuring the men responsible for most of the band’s now classic death metal catalogue, ‘Beast‘ is a vicious commentary on the state of the world and the state of music itself.  Despised Icon renew their focus on the collision of dual vocals, technical wizardry, precision dexterity and massive bottom end they helped to pioneer.

BARB WIRE DOLLS – Desperate
CD – £9.99
Barb Wire Dolls are one of the most vital new bands in music today, representing all that is inspiring and furious about rock and roll.  Hailing from an artist commune on the island of Crete, the band sold everything they owned and left crisis-ridden Greece in 2010 for Los Angeles, at the invite of legendary KROQ DJ Rodney Bingenheimer.  Barb Wire Dolls’ sophomore album Desperate was produced and mixed by Grammy award-winning producer Jay Baumgardner (Bush, Evanescence, Lacuna Coil) and mastered by Grammy award-winning mastering engineer Howie Weinberg (Nirvana’s Nevermind, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik, U2’s Pop).

INDIE/POP/ALTERNATIVE

XTC – English Settlement
CD – £8.99
A classic XTC album from 1982, newly mastered from the original half inch master tape sources. While looking for the (at this point still “lost in the archives”) multi-track tapes to enable Steven Wilson to undertake new stereo & 5.1 surround mixes of the album, the original half inch master tapes were discovered. These tapes were used as source masters from which engineer John Dent has prepared this new “original master edition” – making this the best this album has ever sounded on CD. An album which set standards in 1982 on release sounds, if anything, even better now.  This is Pop.

The Amazing – ‘Ambulance’
CD – £9.99
‘Ambulance’ sees The Amazing continue their journey to a place where music is free of restrictions. Despite reflecting Chris Gunrup’s often bleak worldview, the music is expansive and beautiful, marked by playing that’s as much free jazz as rock – pure music without any showiness. The songs unfold slowly, without a traditional verse / chorus structure, spinning gauzy webs of shimmering mystery with their own inimitable dynamic of sinuous, swirling guitars; rich, ambient basslines; crisp percussion and restrained, church-like, keyboard textures.  The songs brim over with tension and more implied release than actual relief.  “The Amazing specialize in a beauty that isn’t airbrushed or slick or antiseptic, it’s elemental rock – earthy, molten, aquatic, but using each of their qualities to soothe rather than destroy or intimidate.” – Pitchfork

Faun Fables – ‘Born Of The Sun’
CD – £10.99
Faun Fables are back with ‘Born Of The Sun’.   ‘Born Of The Sun’ is in itself another birthing, the songs gestating over several years, then recorded mostly in concentrated periods over the past two winters.  ‘Born Of The Sun’ reflects the rhythms of family living, where each day is a new and irreversible step forward through the necessarily scorched earth of raising children.  ‘Born Of The Sun’ is the bountiful and exuberant album of this place and time – an old, candlelit world of arcane beliefs in our brightly-lit world, growing ever more profound in the light of perpetual discovery that bathes all of Faun Fables’ songs.

Rhyton – ‘Redshift’
CD – £13.99
Rhyton are the Brooklyn-based trio of Dave Shuford (D. Charles Speer & The Helix, No Neck Blues Band), Jimy SeiTang (Stygian Stride) and Rob Smith (Pigeons).  Rhyton take ancestral forms, instrumentation and scales, primarily sourced from Middle Eastern and Greek traditions and incorporate them into the context of scorching improvised rock.  On ‘Redshift’, Rhyton expand their sound and defy expectations by creating a galactic country throwdown, exemplified by the otherworldly cover of Joe Walsh’s ‘Turn To Stone’.  Artwork by legendary New York illustrator Arik Roper (Sleep, High On Fire, Howlin’ Rain, Earth, Pig Destroyer).

neil young – human highway

Floating Points – Kuiper
12″ – £9.99
Floating Points – also knows as Sam Shepherd – has announced Kuiper, which comes after last year’s critically acclaimed debut album ‘Elaenia’.  Out on his label PLUTO, the EP will be available on 12” vinyl as well as digital download.  Speaking about the new release, Shepherd says: “Since starting a band to realise the music from my LP, it has sparked a deep interest in the band itself, and so Kuiper is the result of playing with Leo, Alex and Susumu. Each time we play it, its completely different. We set the scene with electronics, and some drum machines that form the foundation to allow the unfurling of the rest of the track. The version on this EP – believe it or not – was recorded at 8am! The other side – ‘For Marmish Part II’ – is carbon dated by my singing voice. I can’t get that high anymore! It was recorded way before ‘ For Marmish’ on the album but the two tracks happened to be written around the same time.

jameszoo – fool
LP – £14.99
Van Dinther emerged from the small town of Den Bosch in the southern Netherlands in the late 2000s. First as a DJ – with wide-ranging crates of avant-garde jazz, prog and kraut rock, electronic experiments, and beat oddities – and then as a producer capable of impressive sonic and rhythmic incongruities. This spring, Van Dinther joins Brainfeeder with an album that fits right into the label’s expanding take on the modern evolution of jazz music. Across its 11 tracks, ‘Fool’ plays out Van Dinther’s journey to find a musical voice he can be proud of and which can also inspire others. Alongside Verocai, Dafé, and Kuhn, the album features a stellar cast of classical and jazz musicians. All of these different contributions and approaches are weaved together into a whole by Van Dinther, armed with electronics and naivety. At times coherent, at times seemingly haphazard, the album is always joyful.

Various Artists – ‘African Airways One & Two (Funk Connection 1973-1980, Funk Departures 1973-1982)’
First released in 2015 as two separate vinyl compilations, “Africa Airways” is a deep exploration into the furthest parts of 1970’s and early 1980’s  The last decade has seen the un-tapping of an apparent endless well of music from the mother continent and this compilation (in our not so biased opinion) uncovers some of the cream of the crop and stands as one of the finest exponents of the African take on the music that it directly influenced, that being the funk and disco from the USA. Featuring music from Cameroon, Nigeria, South Africa and the international African diaspora this a truly pan-African affair, full of analogue synths, polyrhythms, rich vocals, jangling guitars and production slicker than oil.

Tim Maia – Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul Of Tim Maia
CD – £10.99   LP – £23.99
Tim Maia was the man. A soul superstar with outsize talents and appetites, he revolutionized popular music in his native Brazil in the 1970s. domain archive . He also married five times, served multiple prison sentences, and at the height of his fame, joined a UFO-obsessed religious cult.  After ten years of wrangling, Luaka Bop is set to release ‘Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul of Tim Maia’ a fifteen track survey of Maia’s 1970s recordings, completely remastered, commemorating what would have been the Brazilian musical legend’s 70th birthday on September 28. The release is the fourth in the label’s World Psychedelic Classics series, known for unearthing long neglected masterworks by Os Mutantes, Shuggie Otis, and one of the first compilations of African psychedelia and funk.

Various Artists – Best Of Disco Demands Compiled by Al Kent
The Disco Demands series started sometime in the early 2000s – I couldn’t give you an exact year because it didn’t feel like a big deal, so I never noted it. I simply wanted to put out a compilation of some records I really liked and maybe make a little of the money back I was spending on them. Buy some food and stuff. There’s always been Disco comps around of course but there was rarely anything that strayed too far from the standards.. the same songs kept appearing over and over again, or the comps would feature records you could pick up anywhere for little money. Volume 1 was pretty straightforward – just some nice records, with the only edit being an instrumental of Disco Socks; a strange, thinly veiled reference to the disco sucks movement. Then on Volume 2 I included a few of my edits and introduced the cover up concept to the disco world. That caused a bit of controversy, which of course I loved. And so it continued for five volumes. What we have here then is the full series, give or take one or two cuts, all remastered, many re-re-edited, with lots of nice naked pictures to boot. For those who’ve asked since day one “will there be vinyl” I can finally say yes, you’re holding it!

GONE IS GONE – Gone Is Gone
CD – £9.99
Gone Is Gone may be a new name in the rock world, but its members are anything but unfamiliar. This rock supergroup includes members of Mastodon, Queens Of The Stone Age and At The Drive-In.  With combined sales of over 4,500,000 albums and 3 unique diehard fan-bases, it’s easy to see why this release is so highly anticipated by fans and critics alike.  The explosive debut EP includes 8 songs that combine elements of each members’ previous projects, while still being original and uncommon. Gone Is Gone is not just another flash in the pan side project, or session studio release amongst friends, it’s a calculated effort that is sure to leave listeners wanting more.

INTER ARMA – Paradise Gallows
CD – £9.99
After already having taken forward-thinking extreme music to unprecedented heights over the course of their short but propulsive career, Richmond’s INTER ARMA are back with another opus of epic proportions.   Harsh and acoustic passages (including the band’s first-ever foray into clean vocals) spar with complex rhythmic structures across nine sweeping tracks over 71 minutes of expansive, progressive heaviness.  Dense, funereal, and richly evocative, Paradise Gallows is a vibrant blend of doom, post-metal, sludge, avant-garde, black and death metal, and is a singular and powerful new addition to the band’s already monumental discography.  FOR FANS OF: Neurosis, Cult of Luna, Yob, Tombs, Ulcerate, Mastodon.

BIFFY CLYRO – Ellipsis
CD – £10.99/£12.99   LP – £16.99/£19.99
Biffy Clyro follow 2013’s critically acclaimed #1 double-album ‘Opposites’ with their seventh studio album ‘Ellipsis’ which will be released on Warner Bros. Records / 14th Floor Recordings.  Citing influences as diverse as Tears For Fears’ ‘Songs From The Big Chair’ album, DJ Arca and Deafheaven, Simon Neil has described ‘Ellipsis’ as “more of a punch to the nose than a big cuddle.”  Lyrically, the album’s songs tackle personal issues with the idea of “fighting back” a recurring theme.  Such themes are also apparent in the album’s visceral first single ‘Wolves of Winter’ which captures Biffy Clyro’s famous blend of angular riffs, pummelling rhythms and strident hooks.

Crazy Lixx – Sound Of The LIVE Minority
CD – £11.99
”It’s a milestone for every rock band” – that’s what lead singer Danny Rexon says with Crazy Lixx about to release the first ever live album of their career. And a milestone it is, in more than one way. On the one hand it is the perfect record to sum up four studio albums and more than a decade as a touring band in over an hour of energetic, live rock n’ roll with the very best songs from their catalogue and most requested fan favorites. On the other hand it also marks the end of the band’s most successful line-up with guitarist Andreas Z Eriksson as the lead guitar slinger with this recorded live performance being his last show with the band.

Trick Or Treat – Rabbit’s Hill Pt. 2
CD – £11.99
Trick Or Treat are certainly a crazy bunch of guys… while they are an absolute and super-tight Power Metal band, at the same time they like to share some fun with their audience. Formed originally in 2002 as a tribute band to Helloween, Trick Or Treat soon become a very popular live attraction in their area. on this new album, Trick or Treat had the honor to work with great international guests and friends like Tony Kakko from Sonata Arctica and, in the role of the evil general Woundwort, Tim “Ripper” Owens (ex-Judas Priest – ex-Malmsteen).

CD – £7.99
New England’s Vanna release their new album, ‘All Hell’, via Pure Noise.  The album was produced and engineered by Will Putney, who has previously worked with The Amity Affliction and Miss May I.  “‘All Hell’ is everything we’ve been through, all the problems, all the pain, all the lessons we’ve learned or were forced to face. But make no mistake. These songs aren’t confessions – they’re us being proud and owning the people we are now. This record is you on the other side of the hell you’ve gone through: better, stronger, and ready for more. No matter what you fought through, bled about and survived, we feel it, we’re with you and this records is our anthem. This is the sound when ‘All Hell’ comes crashing down.”  For fans of Architects, While She Sleeps, Your Demise, Beartooth.

Heart – Beautiful Broken

INDIE/POP/ALTERNATIVE

Shura – Nothings Real
CD – £9.99
In many ways ‘Nothing’s Real’ is the perfect title for Shura’s debut album, which mixes the personal and the fantastical to beguiling, immersive effect. It features songs written and painstakingly recorded across two years in her Shepherds Bush bedroom – the site of which is blown up on the album’s striking artwork – but also reaches back further than that: into parents, childhood, past relationships and the possibilities of the future. All threaded together across the album’s often-affecting narrative, the record assimilates everything Shura loves – from early Madonna to Sci-fi, and War on Drugs to gaming – but is also the sound of an artist pushing themselves hard, further into the unknown

Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers – Rehab Reunion
CD – £11.99
How does a platinum selling recording artist follow a summer of “Fare Thee Well”  as a member of the Grateful Dead for their historic 50th anniversary concerts in Chicago and Santa Clara in front of 100,000 people each day ?  If you’re Bruce Hornsby, you saddle up with your own merry band of Noisemakers and make a fantastic new record, “Rehab Reunion.”

Dead Can Dance – ‘Dead Can Dance’
LP – £15.99
On their eponymous debut album, originally released in 1984, Dead Can Dance successfully harnessed a bewitching barrage of sounds, layering grinding guitars and even a dulcimer-like yang chin over a taut wash of percussion. If the range of the group is staggering, then so too is their disciplined economy, no song lasting more than four minutes or degenerating into formless cacophony. With the five group members continually interchanging instruments, only the vocals of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry remain as a constant focus.  This 2016 LP version is a repress of the original release.

Dead Can Dance –  ‘Into The Labyrinth’
LP – £18.99
Originally released in 1993, ‘Into The Labyrinth’ is Dead Can Dance’s sixth album. One of their most successful releases, its title a reference to the Greek legend of Theseus going into the Labyrinth to slay the Minotaur. It came when Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard had embarked on more individual personal paths, writing their songs independent of one another and on separate continents. Engineered and produced by Brendan at his Quivvy Church studio in Ireland, the album is an audiophile benchmark and also noted for being their first without any guests, instead they played all the instruments.  This 2016 vinyl version is also a double LP like the original release but comes with brand new cover artwork and an altered track sequence.

Dead Can Dance – ‘Spleen And Ideal’
LP – £15.99
Dead Can Dance’s second album, ‘Spleen And Ideal’ (1985), saw them experiment more with instrumentation, abandoning guitars in favour of cello, trombone and timpani. Widely acclaimed, there was now a richness of unification between voice and music, lyrics and structure, showing they had a concrete sense of the aural ideal they were striving towards. It’s title was taken from ‘Spleen et Idéal’, a collection of poems by 18th century French poet Charles Baudelaire. This 2016 LP version is a repress of the original release.

THE RAVE-UPS  – Town + Country
CD – £12.99
AMERICANA PIONEERS’ DEBUT – REISSUED AND EXPANDED!  While the members of The Rave-Ups held day jobs in the mail room at A&M Records, they were able to use the label’s studios at night and during lunch breaks to record what would become a genre-defining release.  Enlisting the help of producer Stephen Barncard (Grateful Dead’s American Beauty) as well as the legendary pedal-steel player Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Town + Country appeared on the scene in 1985.  The album gained enough attention to get the band featured in John Hughes’ classic 1986 film, Pretty In Pink. Sadly, their “Positively Lost Me” didn’t make the soundtrack, and the Fun Stuff Records issued Town + Country fell out of print .

The Avalanches – ‘Wildflower’
CD – £9.99   LP – £18.99/£22.99
Following an unprecedented sixteen-year gap between albums and all the revolutions the world has made since the release of their hugely acclaimed, award winning debut album ‘Since I Left You’ (2000), The Avalanches announce their new album, ‘Wildflower’, featuring Danny Brown, MF Doom, Father John Misty, Toro Y Moi, Jennifer Herrema, Biz Markie and more.  Created by the band’s core duo – Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi – ‘Wildflower’ is nothing less than The Beach Boys’ ‘Smile’ reimagined in the Daisy Age; a mind-bending cartoon road movie that’s best viewed with closed eyes and an open mind.  In the years since the release of ‘Since I Left You’ the album has established a rarely seen loyalty, its influence ever growing in the age of digital music, sampling and bedroom producers. The Avalanches, meanwhile, have become the stuff of folklore, with rumours abounding about a long awaited follow-up record. Today the rumours end. Available on the following formats: CD; deluxe heavyweight double vinyl in a quadruple gatefold sleeve with poster and a copy of the album on CD; standard double vinyl with CD.

Eminem – The Slim Shady LP

It was released on February 23, 1999, under Interscope Records and Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment. Recorded in Ferndale, Michigan following Eminem’s recruitment by Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, the album features production from Dr. Dre, the Bass Brothers, and Eminem himself. The majority of the record’s lyrical content is written from the perspective of the rapper’s alter ego Slim Shady, whom the rapper created on ‘Slim Shady EP’ (1997).

Various Artists – Jackmaster DJ-Kicks
CD – £10.99
The next episode of DJ Kicks comes from Jackmaster. The Numbers cofounder and charismatic Glaswegian delivers an honest journey, unearthing a serious passion for the obscure boundaries of house and techno. “The mix is influenced heavily by how I used to DJ at the first party I ever promoted, named Seismic, and another named Monox which was a straight up techno night where I was a resident from the age of 17. And although it wasn’t my plan, it turned into a kind of tribute to the cities that really formulated me as a DJ: Detroit, Chicago and Glasgow.”

Lindstrøm – Windings EP
12″ – £8.99
Like one of his endlessly building tracks, HansPeter Lindstrøm is only moving further upwards. The Norwegian spacedisco wizard’s new EP, Windings , is three tracks of that nowclassic sound closely associated with Lindstrøm’s name: skyward synths, effervescent rhythms, and melodies that spiral beautifully into the great unknown. This is Lindstrøm in the zone—and if you’ve been paying close attention over the last decade, it’s a zone he’s never left. Reliable without sounding complacent and expansive while sounding impossibly selfcontained, Windings is the latest reminder that HansPeter Lindstrøm is on an unbelievable run. It’s an impressive display of virtuoso talent that only the stars can contain, and a dizzying collection of tracks that, as ever, test the limits of achieving total bliss and reaching towards total artistic infinity.

Rage – ‘The Devil Strikes Again’
German Metal institution Rage are back with a vengeance with their latest studio album‚ ‘The Devil Strikes Again’ and a new line up consisting of guitarist Marcos Rodriguez and ex-drum tech Vassilios ‘Lucky’ Maniatopoulos on drums, along with bass player and frontman Peter ‘Peavy’ Wagner. ‘The Devil Strikes Again’ is an impressive testimony of what Rage stand for in 2016. Hard and loud, with catchy rhythms, soaring melodies and stadium choruses.  ‘The Devil Strikes Again’ was produced by Peavy Wagner and mixed by Dan Swanö (Opeth, Marduk, Dissection).

RIVAL SONS – Hollow Bones
‘Hollow Bones’ is the brand new studio album from Long Beach, California blues rock phenomenon Rival Sons. Vocalist Jay Buchanan comments, “Each record we’ve made has been part of a distillation toward revealing the band’s essence.  This record, finally is the release of the unapologetic, wild beast that has long lived within the ribs of Rival Sons howling to be freed.”  Recorded in Nashville’s LCS studios, ‘Hollow Bones’ sees recent two-times Grammy winner Dave Cobb on producer duties yet again, who adds, “Rival Sons are the best rock ‘n’ roll band on the planet!”

MOTORHEAD – Clean Your Clock
Motörhead, Kings of the Road for over förty years, are immortalized one more time in Clean Your Clock, the superb live album recorded at The Zenith in Munich, Germany during the Winter 2015 Bad Magic tour.  Clean Your Clock is also a fitting salute to the power of Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister, who founded Motörhead back in 1975 and so sadly passed away on Dec 28th 2015.  Recorded only weeks before, Lemmy snarls, roars and bangs that bass with the magisterial air of a man who knows he’s a leader.  DVD, BluRay & Boxset version contains footage of the entire show (recorded on 20th November 2015 in Munich) + bonus feature / 90 minutes running time.  Perhaps more than with any other Motörhead album, you need to TURN-THIS-UP because as Lemmy himself said, the only way to feel the noise is when it’s good and loud…

INDIE/POP

Max Jury – Max Jury
On this hugely impressive debut album, Max weaves an intoxicating tapestry of 70’s Laurel Canyon acoustic confessionals and 21st century Neo Soul. It’s a sound of rare beauty. Recorded in New York with hip-hop producer Inflo and a crackerjack band of musicians who often play with Alicia Keys and D’Angelo and in a sleepy North Carolina town with the musical director of a small, local black church. Both places helped Max effortlessly bridge gospel and soul with his country roots.  Mark Ronson says: “Max’s songs and musicianship conjure p so many of my favourite elements of country, soul, gospel and rock’n’roll. I can listen to his album on repeat!”

Big Deal – ‘Say Yes’
London’s Big Deal announce news of their third full-length album, Say Yes, the long-awaited follow-up to 2013’s acclaimed June Gloom. The record arrives via the band’s new home, FatCat Records. The news comes alongside the debut of the album’s title track: a meteoric, towering return perfectly indicative of how Say Yes ups the band’s stakes in every way. Sonically the record still sounds very much like Big Deal, but it evidences a certain newfound confidence. In many ways, Say Yes can be seen as the final chapter of the band’s first instalment. “The first [album] was about not being together, the second about being together, the third is about breaking up and trying to make sense of it all,” Costelloe explains, frankly. “The three albums in effect make one enormous concept record.”

Paul Draper – EP One
Paul Draper was the frontman, main songwriter and producer of Mansun – one of the most iconic bands of the ’90s.  The EP features three equally brilliant, very different brand new tracks. Feeling My Heart Run Slow – a thundering juggernaut of a revenge rock n roll song, No Ideas – a mind-expanding spy movie soundtrack condensed into just under six minutes and The Silence is Deafening – a gleaming pop song that perfectly melds together glacial synths and soaring guitar-bass-drums. The EP also features an alternate mix of Feeling My Heart Run Slow by Andy MacFarlane of Scottish band The Twilight Sad.

Some hear echoes of Garbage’s 1995 debut album in ‘Strange Little Birds’, including Shirley Manson herself.

Globelamp – ‘The Orange Glow’
Globelamp presents her highly anticipated second album, ‘The Orange Glow’, released on Wichita Recordings.  With a voice that can be either ethereal or savage, shimmery as California sunshine through the leaves of redwoods, or dark as a Washington rainstorm but always haunting, Globelamp sings of loss, longing, survival and the enchantments of nature.  Globelamp’s voice has been compared to the likes of Stevie Nicks, Grace Slick, Kate Bush and Donovan and one can recognize the influence of the supernatural, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, psychedelic folk music and punk, but her sound is distinctly her own.

Когда Мне Было 14 Лет/When I Was 14′ – AFX (Aphex Twin)/Bjarki/Nina Kraviz/Biogen/PTU
Titled When I Was 14, the seven-track conceptual album sees Trip return to a format its tried out a few times before: all the tracks relate to a particular story, and are presented as a “continuous sonic landscape.” This time around, that story is a conversation between Kraviz and Trip illustrator Tombo, in which they discussed the way people form their opinions and criticisms. “All things are relative and all eyes are different,” Kraviz says. “In the end it’s important to grow and shape your opinion, make up your own.”  Newcomers and familiar names appear on When I Was 14. Core producers Bjarki and Barcode Population both contribute, along with veteran Icelandic producer and Thule label founder Biogen, and PTU. A track produced by Richard D. James in the early ’90s also appears under his AFX alias, a little over one year after it went online via user48736353001’s SoundCloud account.

Various Artists – DJ Format’s Psych Out
In DJ Format’s own words: The idea for this compilation came about because of my search for a rare psych/funk 7″ that isn’t even included here! My friend DJ Oneofakind played me the said record and I totally lost my mind. Some months later after a lot of asking around and searching online, a copy turned up on Discogs.com for a painful amount of money. I contacted the seller to ask a couple of questions and it turned out I was talking to Jake Holloway, BBE’s in-house designer. I’d loosely known Jake for a few years through mutual friends so we quickly arranged a time to meet and take care of business. Jake told me he’d offered the 7″ to a few other DJ/collector friends but they’d passed on it as it was ‘too heavy’ for them. This got us talking about my love for psych records with a funky slant and I explained my frustration at buying so many records that fit that description, that were ‘too heavy’ to play at my typical DJ gigs. Jake had the perfect solution: “why don’t you do a compilation of funky, fuzzed-out psych stuff for BBE?”.

The Invisible – ‘Patience’
What you will feel most strongly on ‘Patience’ is the how The Invisible’s experiences since the release of their last album, ‘Rispah’, both individually and collectively, mean that the group “have gained a deeper understanding of the value of life” and a mission to communicate that to the listener.  It’s an album which hints towards the London soul of Jessie Ware but combines it with the experimentation of the LA beat scene and the raw funk of D’Angelo.  ‘Patience’ features collaborations with Jessie Ware, Floating Points, Connan Mockasin, Anna Calvi and Rosie Lowe.  For fans of Floating Points, Ghostpoet, Kindness.

INTERPOL – Everything Is Wrong (Solomun Remix)
Solomun reveals his latest remix for popular NYC rock band Interpol. Taken from Interpol’s latest album El Pintor, “Everything Is Wrong” has been given a dancefloor-ready makeover from Solomun. His remix preserves the gritty guitar line, adding a subtle but deep bassline and echoed percussion. The vocals are slightly tweaked, their electronic twang reminiscent of ’80s bands. As Solomon’s strings slowly grow throughout the track. Solomun’s remix of “Everything Is Wrong” preserves the mood and melody of the original, yet is a clearly recognizable production of his own. Includes MP3-codes.

LAURYN HILL – THE MISEDUCATION OF…
A 180gm, heavyweight Black LP Vinyl re-issue of the classic debut from Fugee’s singer Lauren Hill. A double LP Vinyl of x14 songs.  “Though the Fugees had been wildly successful, and Lauryn Hill had been widely recognized as a key to their popularity, few were prepared for her stunning debut. The social heart of the group and its most talented performer, she tailored ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ not as a crossover record but as a collection of overtly personal and political statements; nevertheless, it rocketed to the top of the album charts and made her a superstar.

Cornelius – ‘Fantasma’
Japanese pop noise savant Cornelius was a product of the same Shibuya-kei bubblegum scene that also gave rise to Pizzicato Five.  Released in 1997, ‘Fantasma’ was Cornelius’ creative and commercial breakthrough, a kaleidoscopic, genre-hopping joy ride through contemporary musical history that became Cornelius’ first worldwide release when it was picked up and released by Matador a year later.  Now remastered and reissued as a deluxe gatefold double LP with bonus tracks.
